In March of 2019, the Stress Mastery Questionnaire (SMQ) was submitted to the American Institute of Stress (AIS) for technical review and evaluation by their Certification of Product Committee. The purpose was to determine the validity and effectiveness of the SMQ for use by professionals in their stress management training, coaching or consulting programs. After careful review by the AIS Certification Committee, Dr. Petersen was awarded the AIS Certification of Product Award for his Stress Mastery Questionnaire (SMQ). With this Certification, the SMQ can be recommended highly for use by professionals in their stress management, stress mastery or stress resilience program.

AIS is a non-profit organization established in 1978 at the request of Hans Selye to serve as a clearinghouse for information on all stress related subjects. Other founding members included Linus Pauling, Alvin Toffler, Bob Hope, Michael DeBakey, Herbert Benson, Ray Rosenman and other prominent physicians, health professionals and lay individuals interested in exploring the multitudinous and varied effects of stress on our health and quality of life. James C. Petersen, Ph.D.

The third of 7 Stress Warning Signs measured by the Stress Mastery Questionnaire (SMQ), is Time Urgency. With the exponential increase in information, constant text messaging, Facebook obsession, Twitter-mania and e-mailing blasting, the result can be an increase in physical, emotional and interpersonal stress problems. Article Posted July 14, 2014 - Stress "Friend or Foe?"

Stress is the “Affliction of our Times”. The personal, corporate and social cost of stress is over a billion dollars each year. But the cost of stress is not just seen in the money lost; it can be seen in the decreased quality of life for millions of people around the world. In a 2011 study on stress by PsychCorp, the researchers found that…

~ 29% of employees comes to work five or more days per year too stressed to be effective, which is up from 19% from last year.
~ 66% of workers continue to have sustained, high stress levels

~ Workload remains the top cause of stress, followed by people issues, juggling work/personal life and lack of job security.

In a recent study by the American Psychological Association (APA), the American health care system is failing to meet the needs of what American’s want. The results of this nationwide survey revealed that…

~ Only 19% of Americans stated that they view their health care as completely good.

~ Less than 14% described their health care as focusing on health, illness prevention, lifestyle issues or mental health needs.
~ 32% of Americans say it is very/extremely important to talk with their providers about how to manage stress, yet only 17 % report that these conversations are happening often/always
~ 53 % of Americans say they receive little to no support from their health care provider in managing their stress.
~ 35 % of adults say their stress has increased in the past year and 33 % say that they never discuss ways to manage stress with their health care provider.

One reason why stress is taking its toll is because the American health system is not geared for prevention and the treatment of stress is a low priority. Yet, stress contributes to a host of lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, drug/alcohol abuse, obesity and mental health problems like depression and chronic anxiety. The financial and personal cost of these behaviors is astounding. Stressmaster is devoted to providing the knowledge, tools, training and resources necessary to address this problem.
